Project Aims & Target Groups

In 1997, ERICarts, together with the Zentrum für Kulturforschung (Bonn), received a grant from the European Commission and the Federal Ministry in charge of Womans Affairs (BMFSFJ) to undertake a 2 ½ year comparative research and documentation project on the professional status of women working in the arts and media.  The objectives of the project were: 

  • To collect, exchange and disseminate data/information about women working in arts and media.
  • To investigate models of good practise, programmes and policies.
  • To strengthen European cooperation between initiatives, networks and experts.
  • To raise public awareness about promoting women's equal opportunities in the arts and media, in policy making as well as in production, training and research.
The main target groups  of the project were: decision making bodies in the arts and media (e.g. local, regional, European administration, funding agencies, prize juries, management of arts and media institutions/companies), heads of associations, unions; networks and working groups on gender relations; journalists, researchers. 

 

National Reports

National  studies and sector specific investigations were undertaken in several European countries including Austria,  Croatia, the Czech Republic,  Finland,  France,  Germany,  Italy,  Luxembourg, the Netherlands,  Portugal,  Serbia, Spain,  Sweden, United Kingdom. 


The following key research topics and indicators provided the basic framework for the national reports. 

1. General Labour Market Data 
a) Presentation of data on the general labour market situation for women working in the arts and media 
b) Unemployment statistics (women in comparison to men) 
c) Information on emerging professions, e.g. via new technologies. 
 
2. Representation of Women in Decision Making Positions  
 
3. Funding 
a)  Proportion of women receiving different types of commissions, sponsorship, subsidies, scholarships, awards etc.
b)  Proportion of women represented in juries and other grant giving or funding bodies. 
 
4. Training and Academic Career Profiles 
a) Statistics on proportion of female staff/professors and/to students in different "cultural" subjects and/or institutions of training (e.g. art academies, universities) 
b) Information on the content of training, for example the representation of women in textbooks. 
 
5. Contractual and Social Situation 
a) Information on fees and wages earned by women in comparison to men in different professional or institutional contexts and 
b) An evaluation of provisions made for illness, child or family care which can be of (positive or negative) relevance for women working in the arts and media fields. 
 
6. Professional or Political Strategies
a) Legislation and particular policies  or strategies to enhance gender equality, in general, and in the arts and media, in particular, 
the influence or results of affirmative action plans (e.g. "quotas", institutional "womens plans") and 
c) Evaluation of  "mainstreaming" policies (= integration of  gender equality strategies  in different political contexts)

 

Project Management

The project was led by Ritva Mitchell and Andreas Wiesand and managed by Danielle Cliche and Annette Brinkmann.

An advisory board consisting of Prof. Patricia Adkins Chiti  (Fondazione Donne in Musica, Fiuggi), Dr. Margaret Gallagher (Media and Gender, Paris/London), Dr. Hilde Hawliczek (MEP, Vienna/Strasbourg), Monique Dental (Service des Droits des Femmes, Paris) and Dr. Susanne Plück (BMFSFJ, Bonn) worked together with the project partners and assisted in the  development of the project methodology.
